Life-Saving Steps to Take When You Find a Friendly Stray Cat
Every year, countless stray cats wander the streets in search of food, shelter, and safety. While some may be feral and used to outdoor life, many are friendly and simply need a helping hand to survive. If you come across a friendly stray cat, taking a few simple steps to ensure their safety can make all the difference between life and death.
Here’s how you can prepare and act quickly to save a stray cat in need:
1. Create a Safe Space
Providing a secure, temporary place for a stray cat is crucial until we at Carbon County Friends of Animals can bring them into our shelter. You don’t need much to make a difference—a little preparation can go a long way.
•Use an Extra-Large Dog Crate
An extra-large dog crate is perfect because it can fit everything the cat needs: a litter box, a water bowl, and a food bowl. The crate offers a safe, contained space where the cat can relax without feeling overwhelmed.
•Utilize a Spare Room or Bathroom
If you have an unused spare bedroom or even a bathroom, this can work wonders as a temporary sanctuary. These spaces are typically easy to clean and provide the cat with the quiet and comfort they need.
2. Gather Basic Supplies
Having a few essential items on hand can make caring for a stray cat much easier:
•Litter Box & Litter: Stray cats usually take to a litter box naturally.
•Water Bowl: Fresh water is vital.
•Food Bowl & Cat Food: Wet or dry cat food will provide the nourishment they need.
•Blanket or Towel: This gives them a cozy place to rest.
3. Contact the Shelter
Once you’ve secured the cat, reach out to us as soon as possible. We’ll guide you on the next steps and work with you to bring the cat into our care. Our shelter is often full, so having a temporary space for the cat can give us the time needed to prepare for their arrival.
4. Monitor the Cat’s Behavior
Observe the cat while they’re in your care. Are they eating and drinking? Are they friendly or showing signs of illness? These details are helpful when you contact us and can ensure the cat gets the right care when they arrive at the shelter.
Why It Matters
Every stray cat has a story, and many are desperate for help. By offering a temporary safe space, you give that cat a chance at a better life—a chance they may not have otherwise. Your act of kindness could be the first step in their journey toward a loving forever home.
At Carbon County Friends of Animals, we are committed to saving as many cats as possible. Together, with your help, we can continue to make a life-saving difference for the cats in our community.
If you find a stray cat or have questions, please reach out to us! Your small effort could mean the world to a cat in need.
